The world ranking of renju websites
|36 posts in this thread|
Many people are aware of the Alexa system that a method of ranking all the websites of the world (domains) based on traffic and popularity. The higher is the position, the more reliable the result is. Any website within a top one million can be considered as a very popular site, and the website within a top 10 million as popular site.
There is a big fight at the top of world's biggest websites and the places change nearly every week, but today the world's absolute top 10 is this (March 7, 2008):
You can read more about it in Alexa's page. But the interesting part is to see what are the places of renju websites in the world. It is important to realize that the whole domain is considered as one website. So the web makers who just rent a hosting space from some big provider and the domain name is like www.bighostdomain.com/~mywebname then the user cannot know how popular his particular site is - all the traffic of that domain is accumulated.
The whole ranking system is based on estimation, and can never be 100% precise. It is based on the data, gathered from millions of users worldwide who have Alexa toolbar installed as an add-on in their browser.
Since I do not know about every renju web in the world, I just collect info about those which are also shown in renjunet websites list (based on the average traffic of last 3 months):
domain name / the place in world (March 7, 2008)
renju.net 399,375 RenjuNet
I did not add to the list the websites that do not have a unique domain name and share the hosting with some other websites. Also, the more people start to use Alexa toolbar, the more accurate the world's list will become. Maybe in the future, I will come back to this topic and post the changes in this list.
renju.net receives about 3 million hits per year. It's highest place was during the last world championship, where the week's average place in the world was 70,000.
March 19, 2008
renju.net 357,373 RenjuNet
It seems that most websites' world ranking is dropping. It is normal, because the web world is expanding rapidly, more websites appear every day, and it is possible that even if a renju website is actually gaining more visitors than before, its world ranking may still drop because other non-renju websites move up faster and take higher places.

renju.net 328,646 RenjuNet
It seems that renju.info site has become somewhat idle based on Alexa ranking. On the other hand, Renju Offline (renju.net.ru) made a big leap upwards.
April 17, 2008 - Alexa Ranking Formula Changed!
Here is the announcement from Alexa homepage, explaining the change of ranking formula:
When Alexa began displaying rankings in 1998 it was with the goal of showing Alexa Toolbar users how popular any given site was within the Alexa community. We generated the rankings through an analysis of Internet usage by people who use the Alexa Toolbar. Since that time we've been delighted to see that the Alexa Rankings have become a yardstick by which website popularity is measured. We are grateful to the thousands of people who come to Alexa.com each day to check the Alexa Rankings.
In recent months we've heard from our Alexa users that understanding Internet usage beyond Alexa Toolbar users was increasingly of interest. Ask and you shall receive!
We listened to your suggestions, and we believe that our new rankings system is much closer to what you asked for. We now aggregate data from multiple sources to give you a better indication of website popularity among the entire population of Internet users.
You gave us many other suggestions as well, and we are working hard to implement them. We won't tell any secrets just yet, but you can expect to see new features rolled out over the coming weeks and months.
According to that, the new rankings are:
iwzq.com 573,765 IWZQ
China is a big country with so many renju fans, and it is fair that the Chinese websites have most traffic. So I believe the new counting formula is more fair, indeed. Lets see how the new formula brings us the results some weeks later.
May 10, 2008
iwzq.com 771,198 IWZQ
All these ratings are based on the average traffic on past 3 months. Therefore, the impact of TWC traffic is not very obvious for those webs which were involved with publishing TWC related information.
Because of the TWC impact, the "one-week-average-world-rankings" were:
Naturally, we can expect that the following week's average ranking will drop down to be somewhere close to 3-month average rankings.
May 25, 2008
iwzq.com 984,215 IWZQ
The wuzi8 website was added to list, it took the 3rd place. shwzq dropped a lot, but it is probably just temporary, as the weekly average still shows the place within 2 million. One of the reasons may be that shwzq has bought renju.cc domain that points to the same website, and some people use that domain name to access the Shanghai renju web, therefore old shwzq.com gets less hits than before, although the sum of hits from both domains can be pretty high. Unfortunately Alexa ranking system cannot detect and merge such traffic.

iwzq.com 728,016 IWZQ
There have not been any big changes among the top websites, but the biggest "shakers" this time were renju.net.ru and renju.ee.
I just updated my article by adding the ratings of March 19. Maybe you can notice one unbelievable thing: even though there are billions of websites in the world, two renju websites, Estonian and Finnish, are placed just next to each other!!! What a huge coincidence!! Of course, Estonia is winning by far!! :P
renju.ee 7,136,577 Estonian renju
It is really an amazing coincidence!
Laughing out loud! :P
"renju.info" is not Yamaguchi's. :)
Oh I did not know. I will make the correction.
I added the latest rankings to my article just now. Some big changes in the list this time.
To Mr. Yamaguchi: If you have time, maybe you can also participate in the discussion about Yamaguchi rule, especially in the topic of "dictionary of Yamaguchi rule". I am sure you have lots of experience and analyses to share with the world.
Iwzq.com has a traffic rank of: 15974,582
Is it a new website? I have not heard of it yet. Can you write an introduction of that website, please. What is the content, and who is the maker.
Then from next time, I can add this website to the statistics, and also to the list of Websites at renjunet.
Dear Youzhi Chen,
Thank you for your introduction! I have looked your website, and it is very nice. I hope it will help make renju more popular. It is also interesting to see the translations of articles and comments to them.
But there is one small problem. Among many free articles, I noticed some copyrighted articles which should not be published. The Online Renju Class teaching material, including all the articles of Renju Tactics, are not allowed to be published anywhere. It is only for private use of Renjuclass students. Please remove such articles from the website. Thank you.
At the same time, there is no problem about publishing and translating the articles that you find from:
You are welcome to translate and publish them (with a link to original source, please). They are free. :)
If the copyrighted articles are removed, then I believe we can have very nice cooperation in the future, and your website will become more popular every day. I will try to visit your website frequently from now on. It can also improve my Chinese reading ability.
Very nice to meet you!
